The Rocky Mountains plays host to a wide variety of water sports, and canoeing is one of the best. Whether it is a leisurely paddle around a breathtaking alpine lake or a more adventurous trip in a river, canoeing is a wonderful way to take in Rocky Mountain scenery and achieve a sense of adventure. Canoes are often made of fiberglass, kevlar, plastic or a combination of the three for strength and durability. They may have a spraycover, resembling a kayak, or may be "open," resembling the typical canoe. Whitewater canoes are paddled in a low kneeling position, with a one-bladed paddle. Even a novice paddler can enjoy a day moving about in the still water of a lake; however, experience is usually required to take a canoe out in the open/moving waters of a river.
