FLY FISHING in Vail
About Fly Fishing
Whether you're an avid or beginning fisherman, the Vail Valley offers an abundance of opportunities for the fishing enthusiast. Don a pair of waders and cast for a variety of trout including Rainbow, German Brown, Cutthroat, and Brook. Or cast your line from a raft or dory as you drift on one of our many idyllic rivers and lakes.

The most popular fishing spots are the Colorado, the Eagle and the gold-medal waters of Gore Creek and lovely Nottingham Lake in Avon.

Colorado fishing licenses are required for those ages 16 and older. Local outfitters offer a variety of trips, fly-fishing instruction and tips about water, flies, equipment, techniques and more.

A good source for fishing information is the US Forest Service, 970-827-5715 at Meadow Mountain in Minturn. View More Info >

The Vail Valley his home to some of the finest fly fishing in the nation. With access to the Colorado, Eagle and Roaring Fork Rivers (and many more with a bit of a commute), the possibilities are endless. Fly fishing is generally done in one of two mediums. "Wade trips" are aptly titled for the waterproof waders, or suspender pants, that the fisher wears, allowing them to wade into the water from the shore as they cast for their catch. "Float trips" incorporate both boating and fishing. A raft or boat, usually piloted by the guide, allows the fisher to access both shores and everything in between. So whether from shore or from a boat, plan to cast a line while you are in town. Most of the guides in the Vail Valley have intimate knowledge of fly fishing options in the region, and can impart both wisdom and guidance in finding the right trip for you. Many also offer group workshops and clinics, so be sure to check out the full fishing menu to find the right activity for you and your family. Vendors will set you up with everything you need: from rods to flies to waders to your essential Colorado Division of Wildlife fishing license, vendors can be your one-stop shop. If you're a seasoned fisher, check out the cutting edge equipment that most vendors carry. See "What to Wear - What to Bring"
