KAYAKING in Vail
About Kayaking
Kayaking is the perfect way to get up close and personal with Colorado's beautiful rivers and streams. Kayaking can be exciting and challenging; it can also be peaceful and spiritual, depending on the type of river you are boating. By learning how to kayak in a safe setting with knowledgeable instructors, you will have the skills and know-how that you will need to kayak and have fun whatever your level.
Kayak classes usually offer the basics of water safety, paddling maneuvers, kayak rolling and kayak equipment. It usually takes place in a pool or local lake, and the instructor will have all the gear that you need if you do not have your own kayak and gear. View More Info >
Colorado is home to some of the nation's best whitewater making it a natural venue for an exciting adventure in a whitewater kayak. This is one of the most thrilling and exciting ways to experience the Valley's wonderful rivers. Whitewater kayaks differ from sea kayaks and recreational kayaks in that they are specialized to deal with moving water better. They are often shorter and more maneuverable than sea kayaks and are specially designed to deal with water flowing up onto their decks. Most whitewater kayaks are made of plastics these days, although some paddlers use kayaks made of fiberglass composites. Whitewater kayaks are fairly stable in turbulent water, once the paddler is skillful with them; if flipped upside-down, the skilled paddler can easily roll them back upright. This essential skill of whitewater kayaking is called the "Eskimo Roll," or simply "Roll." Kayaks are paddled in a low sitting position (legs extended forward), with a two-bladed paddle. Whitewater kayaking can range from simple, carefree gently moving water, to demanding, dangerous whitewater. River rapids are graded like ski runs according to the difficulty, danger or severity of the rapid. Whitewater grades (or classes) range from 1 (the easiest) to 6 (the most difficult/dangerous). Grade/Class I can be described as slightly moving water with ripples. Grade/Class VI can be described as severe whitewater. See "What to Wear - What to Bring" Additional notes: Depending on the vendor, you will likely find that a rental package will encompass everything you need to get started in your kayak, including paddle, helmet and spray skirt. In addition to sensible, fast-drying river clothes, you may want to invest in a splash top, which is a waterproof, breathable top. Consult your vendor for additional needs for your kayaking adventure.
