Telemark skiing is a term used for skiing using the Telemark turn. It is also known as "free heel skiing." Unlike alpine skiing equipment, the skis used for Telemarking have a binding that only connects the boot to the ski at the toes, just as in cross-country skiing. Telemark turns are led with the heel flat on the outside ski (the downhill ski at the end of the turn), while the inside (uphill) ski is pulled beneath the skier's body with a flexed knee and raised heel. Telemark skiing is popular both on the ski mountains, and in out-of-bounds territory. "Skins" can be applied to the bottom of Telemark skis. These synthetic applications have texture in one direction, allowing the user to skate uphill, but preventing a slide back down. Because the ankle is free in a Telemark binding, it is easier to climb or skate than in a traditional ski. Another favorite winter pastime is Cross Country ("XC") skiing. The primary functional difference between cross country skiing and alpine skiing is that in XC skiing, the skier is attached to the ski only with the toe of the boot, leaving the heel "free." In alpine skiing, the entire foot is attached to the ski. The free heel allows a XC skier to climb, descend and traverse terrain making the sport a truly "cross country" activity. In alpine skiing and snowboarding, the participant is limited to the range of downhill slope. Cross Country Skiing definitely lives up to it's reputation as the "world's best aerobic workout," but newcomers should not be frightened. Cross Country Skiing can be as easy as a pleasant glide through a neighborhood park...or it can be the best overall fitness experience of your life. Go at your own pace, pick a destination, and off you go. Because you can XC Ski just about anywhere with snow, you can match the terrain to suit your fitness level and interests.
Many vendors in the area rent Nordic equipment. There are also classes and lessons available. At certain times in the year, Vail and Beaver Creek even offer free Nordic lessons but check with your resort to see if the classes are available and open before planning to attend.
